Phone Workers Plan Drive for Benefit Gains
MIAMI BEACH AP A new labor trouble area opened Wednesday with word that the Telephone Workers' union plans a drive to win substantial benefit gains from the Bell System's 4 billion pension reserve. Joseph Beirne said the union will push in 1963 negotiations for improved pensions for about 400000 AT and T employees. The average pension for 69000 retirees is 78 dollars monthly, with a 125 million dollar annual interest yield, enough to fund current benefits without touching principal. The union seeks elimination of half social security offset, pension increases, survivor benefits, hospital and surgical insurance, higher wages and longer vacations. Formal proposals arrive after a Chicago policy meeting March 22 2022. Beirne floated a six month paid sabbatical every five years after 15 years service.
