Eastern Iowans Honored for Military Service

Several area men received military honors and promotions for meritorious service. James W. Hepker earned the Bronze Star and Air Medal for over 25 aerial missions in Vietnam with the 25th Infantry. Donald G. Culberson received the Air Force Commendation Medal at Whiteman AFB. Robert D. Kroupa earned the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious achievement in Vietnam. Theodore Wood Adkins was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement with the corps of engineers. Two men enlisted in the Navy, Richard L. Wilcox and Robert E. Craeger, with others reported home on leave for short periods. Promotions included Richard L. Evers advancing to Specialist 5 in Vietnam.

Local men advance to Vietnam service ranks

Steve Kellerhals of Tipton follows his father Ruby Kellerhals into service as a sergeant bound for Vietnam. David B. Chappell from Mechanicsville transfers to army specialist 4 c in Vietnam. Michael Plueger of Scotch Grove achieves the rank of army sergeant as he heads to service in Vietnam.

Insufficient Funds Delay Cedar Rapids Public Safety Plan

Cedar Rapids officials learned funds will not support a 3.1 million police and fire public safety complex this year. The Iowa Crime Commission said federal law enforcement aid for 1971 will be insufficient for such a grant, with potential relief in 1972 if funds continue. Traffic projects on Mt Vernon road SE and Eighth avenue await 1971 review, delaying T O P L C S funded work and forcing postponement of road improvements and pedestrian overpasses.

Collins to Vacate Downtown Cedar Rapids Buildings

Collins announces operating efficiencies and job cuts, moving personnel from the Third street building in Cedar Rapids Lindale Plaza space and a former 3117 First avenue NE supermarket site to other locations. Similar reductions occur at Dallas Newport Beach and Toronto ops as the firm shifts to core R D areas with a strong backlog of orders and promising growth prospects.

Skating Facilities Closed for Cedar Rapids Winter Season

The Cedar Rapids recreation department reminds residents that city winter recreation facilities are closed for the season. Do not use the Jones park SW toboggan run and sled coasting hill due to bare spots and jagged ice. City ice rinks are closed as well.

New Tavern Entered and Fires Set at Under‑Construction Site

A tavern under construction at 2727 Sixth Street SW was broken into Wednesday night and several small fires were set. In the basement a crate with two sinks was burned. a pile of two by fours was ignited. on the first floor nails were set aflame. Officials cited kerosene or diesel as possible fuels. all fires burned out without theft.
