Convicted Killer Escapes Abilene Prison. Steals Officer’s Truck
John William Roland, 33, overpowered Sgt. Wesley Hurt, took his uniform, handcuffed him, and escaped in Hurt’s pickup near 4:45 a.m. in Abilene Texas. Hurt, treated and released for cuts and bruises, said Roland threatened to kill him. Roland, serving a life sentence for murder since 1993, remains at large.
