Prominent Cedar Rapids Banker Shaffer Dies at 80
Van Vechten Shaffer, 80, of 2001 Linden Drive SE, former chairman of Guaranty Bank and Trust, died Sunday at University Hospitals, Iowa City after a long illness. Born March 30, 1899, he helped found Guaranty Bank in Cedar Rapids in 1934 and retired as chairman in 1972. his family has long dominated local banking.
