The week brings a detailed extended forecast with no precipitation through Saturday and temperatures from teens to the 40s. A long deathly list shows multiple obituaries and local family notices from Cedar Rapids and Marion, plus numerous bankruptcy petitions, speeding fines, traffic violations, and upcoming funerals across nearby towns.
Cedar Rapids officials consider requiring prospective city workers to pass a physical exam at their own expense. Safety Director Lora Summerwill and Personnel Director Fred Nordengren urge council review of exam forms and legal feasibility. Mayor Don Canney warns costs could exceed $40,000 while Parks Commissioner Stan Reinis pushes exams for all new hires and equality in policy. Religious discrimination questions also to be explored in relation to physician consultations.
A 52 year old woman suffered multiple stab wounds at the Linn county group home on 1312 First Avenue NW. Police seek a male suspect after an attack around 1 30 p m. The victim’s identity is withheld pending relatives notification. unofficial reports name her as a home employee. The facility houses mentally retarded women 18 plus and is funded by the county mental health department.
Traffic Engineer Mel Meyer recommends a predictor system to control downtown railroad warnings. It would cut unnecessary crossings closures by over 40 percent at First and Second avenues and improve timing, with an estimated install cost near 94 000 dollars.
At a joint committee meeting, senators backed a smoking ban in the room but house members rejected it. After ashtrays were removed, six senators left, while house members pressed a commerce budget measure. Several named lawmakers from both chambers smoked or abstained.
Several breakins and larcenies were reported to the Linn sheriff's office over the weekend. A breakin at Squaw Creek school near Cedar Rapids netted a stereo set with no value given. American Legion hall at Toddville was broken into Friday night and an old juke box valued at $200 was stolen. Belmond's grocery on route three reported a break in Friday night with about $51 of beer, pop and cigarettes taken. Elfriede Freshwater on route one Springville reported a $200 plow stolen from a field east of her residence. Frank Cach of Cedar Rapids reported $165 of equipment stolen from farm buildings on route one, Ely. Unknown persons seen on the farm on Feb. 8.
Mrs Harold K Trosper, 58, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died of a heart attack in Rowland Heights California. She was born December 25, 1916 in Missouri and married November 2, 1940 in Omaha. Surviving: husband, daughter Sue Moore, three grandchildren, and a Cedar Rapids brother. Burial at Forest Lawn Covina Hills. James Smyth, 100, Cedar Rapids resident, died after a short illness. Born November 9, 1874 in Solon, he married Lida Kelsey in 1906. Survived by a daughter, three sons, a sister, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Services Friday 1:30 at Turner Chapel West. Burial Linwood.
Larry Barker, soon four, recovers his three month old German shepherd Shane after a friend’s care home left the pup missing. The tale sparked hundreds of calls and a Marion caller eventually located Shane confirming the boy’s reunion with his family at St. Luke’s hospital where he was recovering from meningitis.
Amana memorials note Leo Vesely 65 of route 1 Amana died Monday after a long illness. Born November 8 1909 he farmed locally and was WWII Army veteran. Surviving are a half sister Mary Vesely Cedar Rapids and two half brothers Edward and Frank Stangler. Burial at Hala cemetery near Swisher. Services at Brush chapel Cedar Rapids Thursday at 2. Friends may call Wednesday afternoon.
New York based Chemical Bank reduced its prime lending rate to 8.5 percent effective immediately, becoming the first major bank to lower the rate by half a percentage point. The move places the bank as the sixth largest in the nation to adjust the rate.
