British Captain Reg Mehegan Dies in Boxhill Mine Disaster
The British steamer Boxhill struck a mine on the northeast coast near Hull December 31 and sank within minutes. Reginald Mehegan, brother of John Mehegan of 2023 Grande avenue SE, was on the bridge and is presumed lost while signaling. He had survived three torpedoings in World War I and served as chief safety engineer for the Iowa Mutual Liability Insurance. His sister, Mrs. William Townsend of New York City, relays the sorrowful account, noting Reg’s wife Doris awaited him in Hull and that the family holds him in high esteem as a generous man who faced war’s perils with courage. The tale closes with ironic tragedy as Reg’s brother-in-law once married the widow of a World War I army officer, now widowed again as his second husband is killed and his son enters service.
