Iowa civil rights complaints dismissed at high rate
A NAACP analysis finds Iowa's Civil Rights Commission rarely finds probable cause in about 2,000 annual non housing complaints, with fewer than 30 merit findings. The study contrasts Iowa with Nebraska Minnesota and Illinois which show higher rates after front end screening. Backlogs and undefined terms complicate timely action, prompting calls for clearer standards and budget support.

Buchanan County hospital to pay $406,030 in nurse violation case
Buchanan County Health Center has agreed to pay $406,030 to the federal government to settle claims it employed a barred nurse. The facility hired Stepha At nonie Davison in 2007 despite an ineligibility record and later terminated her after notification. The hospital says patient care was not affected and that it followed protocol and mitigation steps. Davison had a history of theft, probation violations, and license issues with the Iowa Board of Nursing and federal ineligibility for Medicare and Medicaid facilities.
