Marion Humane Society pleas for city funds amid rising costs
Cedar Valley Humane Society board member Peggy Fite asked Marion City Council to cover rising animal care costs. In 2006 the shelter handled 476 animals for 71 985 while Marion contributed 15 322. Direct cost per animal is about 151 with 3226 projected for 2007. The agency proposed a 3 to 4 percent cost increase and a 25 call-out fee plus reimbursement of direct costs for Marion strays and police call-outs. An estimated 75 000 to 80 000 would be needed from Marion to sustain services. Mayor Nieland doubts the budget allows it.
