Independence budget hearing set for Monday
Independence City Council will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. Monday on the proposed 2004 05 budget of 8.8 million dollars. The plan raises the property tax rate by 65 cents to 17.32 per thousand, yet reduces overall spending about 9.3 percent from 9.7 million last year. Owners of an 80000 home would pay about 671 in city taxes, roughly 14 less than now, due to lower taxable valuation. City Clerk Debra Lynn notes the higher rate with less valuation still cuts total city taxes, while City Manager Alan Johnson says most departments face cuts and projects are reduced.
