Highs and lows listed for cities from Atlanta to Seattle with precipitation totals. Normal February weather figures, lake pool level, and several local notices including births, police calls, traffic fines, and driver violations reported with names and addresses where provided.
Judge Edward J. McManus is expected to issue a ruling in early March on whether Cedar Rapids city officials used constitutional procedures to deny a theater license and building permit to Mini-16, Inc. The Des Moines firm sought to remodel 411 Second Avenue SE for showing of so called triple-X movies. City officials and observers viewed a film in McManus chambers with R L Davis, Mini-16 president, operating the projector. Final briefs were due Feb 25, and a ruling was anticipated about a week later.
A string of death notices lists ages and addresses from Dorchester Belle Plaine Sigourney and other towns. Entries include service times at local churches and burial or graveside plans with various funeral homes named.
The com mand reported the demilitarized zone breach over an unarmed reconnaissance plane. Other sources say one extra daily reconnaissance over North Vietnam. Officials say the aim is up to date intel and faster flight timing to detect changes in logistics or MIG movements near Hanoi and Haiphong.
In fog on highway 61 south of Mediapolis a two car collision killed Charles C. Buffington, 46, of Columbus Junction, a passenger in Darwin L. Wolford’s car. Wolford, 31, of Morning Sun, had minor injuries. The driver of the third car, Donovan Acord, 36, of Burlington, was not seriously injured.

Nancy Jane Amble Smith, widow of Warren S. Smith and Cedar Rapids resident, died after a long illness. Born May 10, 1894, she lived in Sun City, Arizona with her husband until his death in 1970. she leaves three sons, eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and will be buried at Cedar Memorial. Clara M. Crump, 75, longtime Cedar Rapids resident of 1227 Fifth Street SE, died after a long illness. Born January 3, 1896, she was a Rosary Society member and part of St. Wenceslaus parish. services: memorial mass at St. Wenceslaus and burial at St. John’s. Funeral rites and rosary ahead of calling hours at Kuba funeral home east.
Karel Jares 72 of 1015 Second Street SE will have funeral services Friday at 2 p.m. at Brosh chapel conducted by Karel Prchal. He was found dead near Highway 149 south of Cedar Rapids Tuesday noon from natural causes. A retired farmer born June 23 1889 in Czechoslovakia he lived in Cedar Rapids 20 years and held positions with Czech organizations. He is survived by his wife Jeanne a son Jim in Czechoslovakia and a sister and brother in Czechoslovakia. Cremation committal will follow and friends may call Thursday at the chapel.
Theresa Florence Jenkins 83 widow of Benjamin Jenkins dies after a brief illness. Born July 10 1887 in Iowa City she leaves a daughter Mrs Louis McDaniel a son Lester Jenkins a sister Mamie Fowler and 28 grandchildren five great grandchildren. Pete P Gasper 41 of 1882 Ellis boulevard NW suffered a facial laceration when a backing Iowa Electric Light and Power Co truck struck his head while he worked in a man hole on the Third Ave bridge east end. He, an employee of Northwestern Bell Telephone Co, was treated at Mercy hospital and released. No charges filed.
A mistrial was declared Wednesday in the $414,100 suit by James and Betty Kurtz against Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric Co. A Linn district judge ruled on a defense motion related to petition amendments after the Royale Ballroom fire near Fairfax on November 29 1967. The suit accuses the gas company of negligence in switching from LP to natural gas. the company argues the plaintiffs were negligent. The amendments separate the claims from the original combined petition.
Linn County Treasurer James Hennessey said offices are processing January 28 mail applications for automobile license renewals. Evening shifts are planned to mail out all January applications by week’s end, with hopes to be caught up soon.
Wilson Cedar Rapids Employees Credit Union reelected Carroll Welsh as president at the 38th annual meeting. Donald Trachta was chosen vice-president, M. W. Long secretary, and J. T. Van Orsdal treasurer. Several directors were re-elected to three-year terms, with John W. Wolfe serving a two-year term. Current directors include Frank Nesetril, Robert Soukup, Harold Thomas, Victor Vosmek, and J. C. Kucera, manager.
Connally says debt could exceed present limit by June as annual tax intake and spending swing. He urges Congress to lift the debt ceiling by mid March to prevent a default or disruption.
Belfast AP reports Lt Gen Erskine Crum Britain’s new Northern Ireland commander suffered a heart attack and is hospitalized. The army announced the condition on Wednesday.
Dr. Richard Schulz, executive director of curriculum and instruction for Cedar Rapids schools, was elected president of the Family Service agency board at the annual meeting. Grant Price steps down after two years. Elmer Stambaugh becomes vice president, Mrs. James Gildroy secretary, and Robert Fletcher treasurer. New directors include Mrs. Robert Stary, Dr. David Hammond, Robert Long, Mrs. Thomas Nims, and Mrs. Abraham Oglanian.
Jacques Campbell of 856 West Eighth Avenue Marion was admitted to St Luke s hospital ICU Wednesday afternoon after a falling limb struck him while aiding a friend. Campbell, holding a ladder for Carl T Johnson at 1435 Thirty-fourth Street NE, was injured in the head and back with possible internal injuries. No condition report available.
About 600 customers of Iowa Electric Light and Power Co. on the near west side lost electricity briefly Wednesday after noon due to a fault in the circuit from the Sixth street power plant to the sub station. The fault, likely beneath the river, disrupted power from 12 03 to 12 46 p.m. The courthouse KCRG and police station were among affected facilities.
Swisher residents report several thefts including a $65 suede coat stolen from May's City bowling alley and a car break in at Prairie High School with nine tapes and three gauges taken. Additional losses include a tape player from Kennedy High School and four tires from a vehicle on Johnson Avenue NW.
