Marion star Hugh Leffingwell exploded for 41 points to power a 72-53 victory over Monticello Friday night, securing the fourth straight Wamac championship for his team. The Gazette report by Gene Kovarik notes a historic scoring display and the league title clinch.

Glen Driscoll of 206 Fourth Ave SW has accepted the Ashton High School coaching post after mid term graduation from Buena Vista College. A veteran and former Buena Vista athlete in baseball and basketball, he held leadership roles in the Lettermen’s Club and intramurals and is elected to Who’s Who this year. He is married with one child and served in the army from 1944 to 1947.
The Iowa Teachers College Panthers defeated North Dakota State 45-40 to extend their lead in the North Central conference. A 24-23 halftime edge held up as NDSU went scoreless for 8:25 in the third period.
Des Moines AP report says John Bright Drake University football star is named defendant in a Polk County district court paternity suit filed by Mrs. L. E. Kemp. The suit alleges a relationship began last September with Willa Mae Kemp, born 18, resulting in pregnancy on November 25. It seeks medical expenses and child support until self-supporting. Bright, a Drake junior from Fort Wayne Indiana, was the nation's leading ground gainer last season. The girl does not attend Drake.
In New York Eugene Gairston of 15914 stops Paddy Young of 158 percent in a tight sprint. Across the country Fred Dawson of 13914 Chicago defeats Jesse Flores of Stockton California in a separate event.
A roundup of basketball scores across regional leagues with varied results. Franklin and Roosevelt faced close outcomes while many games were postponed or canceled including Davenport at Dubuque and Loras at LaCrosse Aquinas. Professional and national college actions appear alongside.
Officials from the district attorney office and the New York Athletic Commission prepared reports after middleweight Paddy Young, 22, suffered a fifth knockdown and a stoppage at 2:57 of the second round to Eugene Hairston, 21, at Madison Square Garden.
Howard Brown and Bob White former Indiana grid stars join the Hoosier coaching staff. Brown named assistant line coach and White will work with the backfield. Waterloo steamboat earned a Des Moines trip with a 41 38 victory over Roland in the northeast district final. In the consolation game Clutier beat Williams 48 41 behind Koeppen's 26 points. The winners led 27 12 at halftime and coasted to the win.
In a five county to 15, West Waterloo dominates the prep basketball outlook for the state finals. The Big Six favorite has lost only to Dubuque, with a lineup led by guards Robert and Jim Lutgen and a 6-3 average height. Forest City, Holy Family and Mason City also show strong returns as eastern Iowa teams eye multiple classes.
DePaul University in Chicago said four basketball players are ineligible due to scholastic deficiencies. Forwards Bob Kampa Dave Matz and Ray Caplis and Guard Earl Wylder are affected. Kampa and Matz have been starters. Meyer noted Matz may regain eligibility later, others will not this season.
