At a Cedar Rapids forum on downtown recovery after the 2008 flood a panel discussed ten years of free parking and other flood control ideas. Mayor Ron Corbett urged state and federal funding to implement downtown free parking for a decade. The event drew a standing room crowd at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art.
Kathy Kamberling plans to relocate Elegant Repeats and Elegant Bridal & Formal Wear from 1101 Second Ave SE to March to clear space for Cedar Rapids Medical District development. Mercy Medical Center to St. Luke's Hospital area plans announced in October. district boundaries and affected property owners remain fluid with March meetings anticipated.
Linn County State Bank in Marion and Coggan adopted credit card sized GPS devices in cash bundles to track loot and suspects. Police can follow the devices to recover cash, as in a Chicago area robbery last December. Bank officials say the system reduces robbery risk and is now cost effective. Local police departments note the move as a first in the state.
The University of Iowa budget panel recommends dropping some low enrollment course sections and adopting performance based pay for faculty to improve quality and save costs. The group also highlights revenue growth by 24/7 year round education and redefining salary commitments.
