A North Atlantic storm toppled the Ocean Ranger offshore Newfoundland as 84 workers aboard reportedly perished. Only one body recovered. 15 Americans, 52 Newfoundlanders, 16 Canadians, and one British national aboard. GM to lay off 6,100 as rebates flop and plants idle

Reagan won't back down say Block at Iowa fundraiser

West Des Moines Agriculture Secretary John Block told about 300 attendees at an Iowa Republican fund-raiser that President Reagan is not going to back down. He said the GOP has fought to turn the country around and noted progress despite challenges. The 280 paid attendees heard responses to questions at the Breckenridge Inn.

Rush hour crash injures Cedar Rapids man

A 36 year old Cedar Rapids man, Dennis T. Fear of 1818 Western Drive SW, was seriously injured in a two vehicle collision on Highway 30 west of the city. Fear, who was driving northbound on Burdette, crossed the highway and turned into the westbound lane, police said. Fear was charged with driving on the wrong side of the road. David Goodall, 18, of Van Horne, in a Chevrolet Blazer, was treated and released from St. Luke's Hospital. Lifeguard air ambulance transported Fear to St. Luke's after the crash. Witnesses described a near head on collision and a fire in Fear's engine, which bystanders helped extinguish with snow. The Fire Department aided in extricating Fear.
