Rock Kills Boy When 100-Pound Boulder Slams Car
A 11 year old boy, Joe Slattery of Waterville, died from a skull fracture after a 100 pound rock loosened by warm weather crashed onto the roof of a car traveling 50 to 55 mph near the Marquette Prairie du Chien bridge over the Mississippi. His 16 year old brother Don, the driver, was injured in the neck. Other passengers included Mr and Mrs Slattery, their daughter Ellen om and niece Joan Monroe. The family was bound for Clarke college in Dubuque to attend an operetta. Tom Slattery, a student at Loras college, was in the operetta cast. The body was taken to a Waterville funeral home.
