Fire destroys Farmers Cooperative Elevator in Malcom
A early Monday fire destroyed the Farmers Cooperative Elevator in Malcom Poweshiek county causing about 2 million dollars in damage. The blaze forced evacuations of nearby homes as flames endangered anhydrous ammonia tanks. Firefighters from Malcom Grinnell Brooklyn and Monticello saved a lumber yard and fertilizer facility. A propane tank exploded and rolled into a second tank near metal gates but no injuries were reported. The fire was reported around 2 30 a m by a Rock Island freight crew and had burned likely for some time before detection. About 60 firefighters contained the blaze by dawn along the rail tracks on the town south side.

Gunman in New Rochelle Warehouse Kills Three
A 35 year old New Rochelle man identified as Fred Cowan opened fire in a Neptune Worldwide Moving Co warehouse. He killed at least three people including a police officer, wounded several others, and held hostages high above the ground on the warehouse roof.
