Iowa City and Johnson county clash over disposal rules prompting a mounting garbage pile by the Johnson county courthouse. City officials cite public right of way as pickup zone while refuse remains behind the courthouse awaiting a resolution.
The Chessie System and Southern Railway failed to buy 2000 miles of track, shifting that track into ConRail. The move expands ConRail to over 17000 miles, raises rehab and maintenance costs, and reduces Northeast and Midwest competition. The purchase collapsed at midnight Wednesday due to labor agreement failures.
Cedar Rapids Weather report shows February totals and normals with a 1.03 inches month total and 2.54 inches year to date. Extended forecast calls for light rain or snow Monday with highs in the 40s to 50s and mild temperatures into midweek. An 84 year old Cedar Rapids woman reported losing 5000 in a pigeon drop. Two white females approached with a bag of 30000 found in a phone booth and convinced her to withdraw cash. Names used were Julie Crawford and Joyce Lindquist. Suspects fled in a late model grey car after taking the money.
Rep. Mike Blouin and Sen. John Culver urged reordering national defense spending at a Cedar Rapids rally. Blouin proposed a 11.5 billion annual save through 1980 by streamlining forces and missile programs to bolster elderly aid, health, education and unemployment relief. Culver called unemployment the 1976 bellwether and criticized Ford policies as the economy recovers.

In a contentious vote Linn county senators split with Robinson and Severn for the bill while Redmond opposed it. The roll call shows 15 Democrats and 15 Republicans voting for and against the measure, with several absentees.
Patty Hearst describes being bound gagged and dragged to a car with five SLA members including DeFreeze, Harris, Perry, and Emily Harris. She says she was confined in a closet and forced to record tape messages demanding SLA goals, while fearing execution if she spoke or attempted escape.
