Cedar Rapids and county districts face mixed millage changes, while Marion sees a small drop and Linn County explores staffing limits.
Herbert Pennock of Anamosa was freed from Linn County jail on a $2,500 personal surety bond under supervision of Linn County community court services after being charged in a federal complaint with using false ID to buy a firearm on Jan 27. He guarded inmate Ronald Brewer when Brewer escaped Jan 29, the same night a local couple was killed. Brewer is at large. Pennock also faces $7,500 bonds on Jones County charges of perjury and aiding escape. A Henderson Illinois couple posted $15,000 as surety, but as of Friday the papers were not court-signed.
The Bill Riley state fair talent search show will be held Friday at Sigourney High School. The program begins at 8 p.m. and is sponsored by the Sigourney school music boosters.
West Des Moines Iowa hosted its annual Republican Lincoln day dinner on March 25 with speakers Nick Thimmesch an Iowa born syndicated columnist and political satirist Mark Russell. The event is a $50 a plate dinner at the Val Air ballroom.
Obituary notices list John A Baer 18 days old and Silver M Lohn 73 as Cedar Rapids area deaths with burial and visitation details. Also noted are Raymond Gatzke 56 Iowa City resident, Robert J Thoennes 47 Iowa City Cedar Rapids connection, and numerous funeral services including St John s Lutheran Ely Zion Lutheran Battle Lake Donahue memory gardens Iowa City.
The civil service commission may rule next week on the appeal of former Cedar Rapids officer Ronald Mallary, who was fired for neglect of duty and misusing sick leave. Mallary’s lawyer argued dismissal is too severe given prior punishment and contested the New Year’s Eve incident.
Two traffic accidents left Randall David Paul and Jessie Mae Harris in fair condition at St. Luke’s hospital. Paul, 13, rode on a school bus bumper and fell after 550 feet, while Harris, 61, was hurt in a two car crash at A avenue NE and Fifth street NE. Frances Emanuel, 60, treated for shoulder contusion, was not hospitalized. Police charged Paul with unlawful riding.
Garnavillo faced a water outage after a main pump broke, leaving the town short on supply. Officials urged residents to conserve while Thorpe Well Co. works on repairs, with recovery time unsure and the town relying on a secondary pump not meeting needs.
Cory Kamm 19 of Fayette had parole revoked after fleeing to Texas and being recaptured. Convicted in December, he received a ten year suspended sentence for breaking and entering in St Lucas and West Union. He is sent to the men's reformatory at Anamosa to serve out the sentence. Appeal bond set at 5000 dollars.
Suspect shot outside the tavern and recovered. Bond set at 50000 for three men Overby Linsey and Hintz praised by Assistant Chief Wallace Johnson for swift action. Heiderscheid did not fire but held the shotgun when wounded as officers secured the scene.
Kirkwood Community College horticulture students proposed three new parking lots behind Iowa Hall with a 252 car capacity to boost space from the current 20. Plantings would screen the lots to preserve countryside views. The board directed John Blong to prepare rough cost figures and return with the proposal.
Alan of the Presidents Council of Economic Advisers told the Senate Appropriations Committee he saw definite and quite hopeful signs of inflation easing. He noted softening in farm and industrial prices as stocks surged. The Dow rose 11.89 to close at 726.92, aided by a New York Stock Exchange record 35.16 million shares traded.
Jewelry valued at 1525 dollars reported stolen from the Dorothy Carey residence 1620 Second Avenue SE. Police say two gold charm bracelets worth 1000 dollars a ring with seven small diamonds worth 500 dollars and a silver charm bracelet worth 25 dollars are missing along with 30 dollars in cash.
