Expert Report Sought to End Iowa Deaf School Conflict

Dr E L Elstead of Gallaudet University will inspect the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs March 11 13 and report to the Board of Regents at its March meeting. The Iowa Association of the Deaf and others allege low standards and lack of qualified teachers, claiming 70 to 80 percent hold no degrees and that graduates have not earned high school credentials since 1945.

Freight Engine Derailed Into Antowan Yard

A Rock Island freight engine derailed in Laurens Antowan yard after jackknifing cars sent the diesel rolling down an 8 foot grade toward the Delano home. The engine rested upright near the kitchen window without damaging the house while five cars derailed and halted traffic on the Des Moines to Sioux Falls line.

Seven Plans for Reapportionment in Iowa Legislature

Des Moines reports seven reapportionment proposals in the 1959 Iowa session. Governor action committee chair Frank Nye outlined plans favoring population based House seats and area based Senate seats. The Farm Bureau backed JR6 proposes a 60 member Senate and 99 member House. Escapee Nabbed After Sioux City Escape

Harold Cecil Jones, 56, of Sioux City, was captured in Fairfield after escaping from Deputy Sheriff George Grimesey while en route to Fort Madison. Grimesey received a seven day suspension for negligence. Jones faces a three year sentence for lascivious acts with a child.

Des Moines residents report 79 year old George Hixson spilled gunpowder stored for at least 45 years on burning rubbish in his yard. An explosion burned his hands and face. he is listed in satisfactory condition at Iowa Lutheran Hospital.

Elvis R. Meyers, 32, admitted shooting his wife in the head three times with a .22 pistol after an argument over a midnight snack. The mother of five died instantly. Meyers faces an open murder charge. He is a former Des Moines VA hospital patient.

Residents protested plans to pave the alley between 20th and 21st streets NE citing minority impact and traffic concerns. Parks Commissioner Gardner travels to the Great Lakes Park Institute in Angola Indiana Feb 23 27.
