Walz vision spurred Wild Bill’s Coffee Shop legacy
UI professor Tom Walz recruited mentor figures to aid disabled former student Bill Sackter, turning North Hall space into Wild Bill’s Coffee Shop and later creating Uptown Bill’s Coffee House and the Extend the Dream Foundation. His work funded and inspired disability enterprises worldwide, including Mick’s Workshop and the Disability Creative Works Gallery, while guiding students like Barry Morrow, Oscar winner for Rain Man, in preserving Sackter’s story. Walz’s illness led to a moved Founder's Award event, but the tribute proceeds with community memory intact. He is survived by his wife Lisa, six children, and many grandchildren.
