Democrats dispute Iowa unemployment statistics
House Democrats released a document arguing Iowa’s true jobless rate is 9.9 percent, higher than the 5.3 percent state Job Service figure, and higher than 7.1 percent cited by Job Service director Colleen Shearer. They contend 54,000 hidden jobless are not counted and note outmigration and underemployment. Shearer says the 5.3 percent underestimates but 9.9 percent is too high. using workforce minus employed yields 7.1 percent. Federal data show 8.9 percent in December.
