Hoover Coffee testified in his murder trial that he shot Michael Lawson on October 24 believing the act was not intentional. He said they went out earlier and searched for a drink with no argument the day before. Mrs. Coffee described a troubling family incident involving her mother and her 14 year old son.
The Linn County recorder, E. F. Pat Kane, urges boat owners to renew licenses by April 3. Only about 1,000 of an estimated 8,000 boats have current 1969 1971 licenses, with mail renewals available. Renewal requires a completed card, current registration, and a $4.50 fee, though licenses issued before Jan 1968 may be renewed through Des Moines until June.
Cedar Rapids Community School District challenged a $26,730 condemnation award on a 0.6 acre tract near Robins Road and Council Street NE. In Linn County District Court the district argued the property is not worth more than $20,240. The site, owned by Dr. J. W. Pirie, was condemned for a proposed elementary school.
City briefs note a panel discussion on abortion proposed legislation at Bishops downtown. The Cedar Rapids school board met to discuss 1969-70 salaries with teachers seeking 6800 for beginners. the board offered 6500 and calendar plans were approved. Everett W. Gross asks Ft. Dodge federal court to delay his fraud trial tied to a correspondence school operation citing poor health. He is a Decorah native now in Helena Montana and faces trial March 3. He has heart condition treatment in Rochester Minnesota and has filed affidavits accusing Judge McManus of bias, which the judge denies. Others charged in the case include Dean’s List Edward Honare and several Cedar Rapids residents.

Three men were held in Linn county jail on charges of receiving stolen property. James W. Stodola 33 of Shellsburg Ronald D. Lint 23 of Palo and Phillip Booth 24 of Palo were arrested Thursday morning by Linn County deputies. They allegedly possessed tools stolen in a December break in at Miller's garage 1300 First Avenue NE and goods taken in January.
