Baltimore backyards pursue aquaponics for food and jobs
Meir and Leah Lazar expand a backyard aquaponics setup aiming to feed their family year round. In Baltimore, Colburn Arboretum partners with Johns Hopkins to raise tilapia and leafy greens for sale in food deserts using a $10,000 budget and student volunteers. The plan includes four 250-gallon tanks, nutrient converted water, and a goal of 120 pounds of tilapia every six weeks.
