Final arguments in I E death claim over Lake Macbride tragedy
Cedar Rapids based Iowa Electric Light and Power faces a 1.5 million actual damages claim after a 1979 electrocution on Lake Macbride killed 24 year old University of Iowa graduate student Brad Groff. The suit cites nine negligence counts and seeks damages for the widow Marina Groff. The trial before Judge L Vern Robinson began with jury selection and was expected to finish that afternoon. Groff’s death halted by rerouting the power line, and testimony covered the victim’s education and potential lost earnings.

Ombudsman urges end to Civil service requirement
Iowa Ombudsman urged the Legislature to reconsider the 1937 rule forcing cities of 15 000 or more to maintain civil service systems. He noted half of the 21 large cities were not in full compliance and warned legal challenges could follow if jobs or promotions were denied due to missing civil service structures. The Iowa League of Municipalities backs letting cities set their own personnel policies.
