Iowa bribery issue raises new questions in Legislature

Iowa lawmakers face a widening bribery probe as the new criminal code restricts gifts to officials, jeopardizing Senate picnics and campaign contributions. Lobbyists cut off money from 18 client groups, some fearing gifts could be construed as bribes. Rep. Terry Durland displays a box soliciting “things of value” for Attorney General Turner, who insists gifts must be strictly interpreted. Lawmakers note nightlife shifts to casual dining, with lobbyists still sharing opinions, while no home pressure to change the law is reported.
