George F. Getz aged 72 of Chicago and former treasurer of the Republican National Committee died of pneumonia in Miami Beach Florida. He was hospitalized January 30 after falling ill aboard his yacht and had shown improvement days earlier. Getz had served as RNC treasurer beginning in 1933 before resigning prior to the 1936 campaign.
The federal appeals court suspended minimum prices set by the National Bituminous Coal Commission for soft coal used by railroads and for Cleveland, saying the commission did not hold a required public hearing. The stay was issued at the request of several railroad and coal groups, casting doubt on the remaining price structure.

N E Taylor of the National Inventors congress spoke in Chicago about a boy who allegedly devised an electrical ray. He said the device could disable electrical apparatus within eight miles and called it the world’s greatest implement of peace to stop war.
Ruth Marie Rubens, a central figure in a spy mystery, refused American government legal counsel after an interview at Moscow's Butyrskaya prison. Embassy official Loy Henderson reported Rubens did not want an attorney and did not complain of her treatment.
Four Manchester men were jailed after Delaware and Buchanan counties solved a series of chicken thefts. Wilson 28 and Bernard O Dell 23 are in Linn county jail Cedar Rapids. A large airline plane flew from New York to Los Angeles carrying two phials of serum that may save 15 year old Bebe Kleinberger in an iron lung at Cedars of Lebanon hospital. The serum was prepared by Dr. Albert Sadlin of the Rockefeller Institute and Dr. Jesse Bullowa of Harlem Hospital, in a race against death.
