Steam Cloud Triggers Detour on Highway 30 Near ADM Plant
A dense steam cloud from the ADM Corn Sweeteners plant forced a four hour closure of Highway 30 as state and city officials enforce a new detour policy adopted after a January 1988 fatal crash blamed on steam. Maury Burr of IDOT said cold, humid, southwest wind conditions caused the plume to near the road. The policy requires closing when steam reaches within six feet of the surface and remains or moves unpredictably for eight to ten minutes. The road reopened at 11 40 a m.
