Two attendants from Cedar Rapids and Atlanta reacted as a cable hoist failed during a Kosair Shrine Polack Brothers circus act in Louisville. They steadied the rig with ropes to slow the 900 pound frame, sparing four aerialists from serious injury while suffering rope burns themselves. The gymnasts Dollye Green Ora Eagleman Dorothy Pina and Elaine Miller were uninjured.
The legislature considers amendments to a colored oleo bill with penalties for serving imitation butter and bans on colored oleo sales unless 80 percent fat comes from soybean oil. Racing to roll call, officials would enforce these rules through the State Department of Agriculture and county attorneys.

Five people were injured when a four ounce bottle bomb exploded in the Washington state penitentiary business office on Monday. Warden John Craner was temporarily deafened. two secretaries were treated for shock. Prison officials said Al Gruber held the device and was critically harmed along with Deputy Warden Al Remboldt. The bomb, found in a cell during a routine shake down, contained a gelatine like blackish powder. The prison was closed as FBI and sheriff’s deputies investigated.

Charles J. Cash Jr., Anamosa postmaster, was released on a $5,000 bond from Linn county jail after arrest on embezzlement charges. He allegedly took about $13,000 over six years via check kiting, according to a postal inspector.
The Linn county board of supervisors approved abandoning a Marion township road after an hour long hearing. The Hamiltons filed the petition insisting the road through their property near Lakeside is seldom used and poorly kept. Opponents led by Anton Kudina argued the route is safe in good weather and provides a short way to Marion, but the board cited safety concerns and prohibitive costs to improve the road.
The state began presenting evidence Tuesday in the second offense drunk driving case against Hugo J. Hilmer 41 of Walker in Judge J E Heiserman s court. A jury was chosen Monday with Cedar Rapids residents Lucile M Malek Merlin E Morris H Pearl Gunderson Donald H Kopecky Leslie E Wiles Lottie Taylor Merrill L Grove Derwin R Elliott Elsie J Bailey Ida L Carnell and Robert Taylor Grant Township and Wayne W Hutchins Maine Township serving as jurors.
Glenn Truesdale, 26, of Marion pleaded guilty to embezzlement of an automobile and received a five months sentence in Linn County jail. Judge Charles Penningroth ordered the term to start December 31, from when Truesdale was first jailed. He allegedly took a car on December 29 and shifted from innocent to guilty on Tuesday after an initial plea January 8.
Three wills were admitted to probate Tuesday. The will of John Stirsky who died January 1 names his widow Mary as sole heir with Lenora Cloughy appointed administratrix with a $1000 bond. Fred W. Deiter died December 10 and leaves widow Bess as sole heir and executrix without bond. Arthur B. Burnell died January 12 naming widow Merle as sole heir and executrix without bond.
Joseph J. Hronik Jr sues the Rock Island railroad for 1500 dollars claiming damage to hay and alfalfa. He alleges the railroad right of way runs beside his property and that the fence was not maintained. A fire blamed on a train reportedly ruined 1000 dollars of hay.
Two suits have been dismissed by the plaintiffs in the case of R. H. Weldhouse versus Francis W. and another party. The brief notice indicates voluntary dismissal with no further action expected.
Dorothy A. Boat, Eva J. Hampton sue Richard J. Hampton seeking divorce. The filing names both plaintiffs and the defendant and flags ongoing civil action in the state court system.
Stuart Fairbanks aged 39 of 621 First Street SW pled innocent to a second offense drunk driving charge before Judge Charles Penningroth. He was arrested Saturday by Marion police on the Blair Ferry road. Bond was set at $1,000. Fairbanks had a prior drunk driving conviction in Jones county on Oct. 2, 1948.
Glenn Gerstenberger 23 of Independence was sentenced by Justice Charles Benesh to 30 days in Linn County Jail for passing a worthless $15 check at the Me Too store on January 3. He was arrested Monday night in a downtown tavern.
A charge of assault with intent to commit rape against George A. Loehr, 49, of Stone City, was dismissed Tuesday by Judge J. E. Heiserman. Loehr faced the offense in a preliminary information dated June 27, 1952, after review by the September grand jury and postponement by the January term grand jury. Loehr had been freed on bond.
Ilene F. Davis awarded custody of her daughter Judith Pyle in a habeas corpus suit against Robert P. Pyle. The suit claimed the Kansas court had already granted custody to the mother. The Medical Arts Clinic was awarded $102.93 against Elias and Rose Henry in an account suit. Cedar Ra-Sheet Metal Company sued Merle Zearing for $213.24 claimed as due.
City council preserved a 44 hour work week and rejected a 40 hour goal while enacting employee favorable changes. Fire and police groups voiced discontent as the council prepared to fix a $10.50 monthly raise for the detective inspector and address underpayment for Inspector Murphy.
SIGOURNEY Clarence M Wells 86 retired rural mail carrier and former business man died Monday at his home after influenza illness. He retired in 1931 and for decades made rounds by horse and buggy. Survivors include son Dr Earl Wells of Atay Ore and Leeee Albert Stephen of Chicago, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services tentatively set for Thursday at Reynolds funeral home where friends may call.
Paul Wagner, former Nebraska budget director, is appointed a special assistant in the White House office, announced in Washington by AP.
The National Defense Week observance opens Thursday in Cedar Rapids with seven luncheon talks by army and navy reserve officers and ROA members. Speakers include Comdr. Carl Kirwin, Major James Bruce, Lt. Col. Darrell Schumacher, Major Robert Nelson, Capt. Robert Nicholson, Lt. Col. Gordon Simonds, and Capt. Richard Jenkins. The talks stress a strong defense and the role of reserves, urging employer support and public education to motivate active and reserve service.
The Cedar Rapids board of education calls for candidates to file for the three year seats and a one year seat. Nominations close February 27 at 5 p.m. Forms are available in Lundquist's office. A $2 750 000 bond issue for new elementary schools and additions appears on the ballot with a required 60 percent approval. Residents outside city limits may vote if in the independent school district. non residents need not register.
Beatrice Reilly 69 of 1328 Sixth Street NW Cedar Rapids died in a local hospital Monday. Born May 11 1883 she had lived in Cedar Rapids 50 years and was connected with St Patrick's church and the Gold Star Mother’s organization. Survived by six sons five daughters a brother two sisters 32 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A son Edmund was killed in World War II. Services at St Patrick's Church with burial in St John's Cemetery. Knights of Columbus will recite the Rosary at Teahen Chapel Tuesday night.
Beatrice Letovsky 84 widow of John M. Letovsky died in a Cedar Rapids nursing home at 2 p.m. Monday after a lingering illness. Born in Johnson County on September 10, 1868, she lived most of her life in the Cedar Rapids area and belonged to Cesky Eo and Anna Naprstek. Survived by two daughters Rose Vesely and Beatrice Letovsky, a stepson John B. Letovsky, three brothers Edward Sulek Aldrich and Frank, two sisters, three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Kuba funeral home to conduct at 10 a.m. Wednesday with Rev. Zdenek F. Pauk. burial in Czech National Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.

Barton Wilfred Cron, a Cedar Rapids resident for 41 years, died in Elgin Illinois Sunday at 6 p m after a brief illness. He was born October 23 1867 in Morrison. Survived by wife Nellie E Foster of Evanston Illinois daughter Margaret W Voss of San Diego a son Robert C Cron of Los Angeles and 10 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He was a member of the Presbyterian church. Services at the Turner chapel at a later time to be announced.
Alvin J. Gurley 120 Fourth Avenue SW a World War I veteran and Cedar Rapids resident for 33 years died Sunday. Services will be at Turner chapel at 1 30 Wednesday conducted by Rev Milton E White of Bethany Congregational church. Burial in Linwood Cemetery with graveside military rites by the VFW. Friends may call at the chapel.
Mrs. James Reilly of 1328 Sixth Street NW Cedar Rapids died Monday after fifty years as a resident. Services set for 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Church conducted by Rt. Rev Msgr D J Lenihan. Burial in St. John's Cemetery. Knights of Columbus to recite Rosary at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Lenihan at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Teahen chapel where friends may call.
Funeral arrangements are set for Fred Farrell a manufacturing representative of 3741 Center Point road NE whose death occurred Monday. Services will be held at Chapel of Memories Cedar Memorial Cemetery at 3 p.m. Wednesday conducted by the Rev F A Munneke. The body was moved from Beatty mortuary to the family residence where friends may call until noon Wednesday.
The FCC approved the merger of ABC and Paramount to form American Broadcasting Paramount Theaters Inc. The new group will control 17 stations including KECA KGO WXYZ WJZ and WBKB plus Chicago Balaban and Katz theater, KTLA moved to Paramount Pictures, and Dumont network authorizations renewed. Unified Paramount contributes 600 theaters in 297 cities while ABC provides its broadcasting network with 353 radio stations and 76 TV affiliates.
Charles William Rice 93 of Auburn died Tuesday morning. Born September 10 1859 in Spring Creek Black Hawk County he married Martha Landress on December 26 1887. He was once Auburns marshal and a cemetery sexton. Survived by nine children thirty two grandchildren twenty one great grandchildren one great great grandchild. Services Thursday at 1 30 p m Miller funeral home with burial at Mt Auburn.
A weekend break in at Leo Martin law office in Sigourney saw a burglar steal 14 dollars and 80 cents using a skeleton key. The Red Cross office on the same floor was entered but yielded nothing. An attempted entry at Updegraff and Son failed. Edwin Wilcockson's law office nearby reported a purse taken for 104 dollars.
Craig R. Sheaffer of Fort Madison was confirmed as assistant secretary of commerce on Tuesday by the Senate.
