Supervisors Clash With House Over Local Wage Rules
Local officials denounce a House measure as an attack on home rule. It would strip cities and counties of power to set higher minimum wages or adopt stricter civil rights ordi nances and ban local consumer rules such as plastic bag bans. Johnson County and Linn County leaders call it a Trojan horse preemption plan, threatening current county wage rates of 10.10 and 8.25 rising to 9.25 and 10.25, while counties like Wapello and Polk also posted higher rates.

Elimination of local wage rules faces House panel
A section of House Study Bill 92 would void any local action conflicting with state or federal minimum wage once signed. Critics say it threatens home rule and civil rights protections while supporters frame it as limiting local control. Johnson County already raised wages to 10.10 an hour, Linn 8.25 rising to 10.25 in 2019, and Polk 10.75. Local officials warn the measure could erode local ordinance discretion.
