Valdez Survives Historic Avalanche Cut Off By Road
In January 2024 Valdez Alaska faced a record setting avalanche known as Calamanche 100 feet tall and over 1,000 feet long. The slide dammed the Lowe River creating a half mile lake and shut the Richardson Highway. Residents adapted with air and ferry access while outsiders feared panic.
