Fatal party shooting case moves in Iowa murder trial
Elizabeth Rutter reports from Cedar Rapids on the first degree murder trial of Luis Guzman Perez, accused of shooting Josh Wohlman after a 2 a.m. party Oct 15 2006. Witness James Ebersole testified he tried to de escalate the fight and saw Wohlman fall after shots rang out. Forensic pathologist Michele Catellier said the bullet entered Wohlman’s forehead and the blood alcohol reading was .15. The trial resumes Monday with three witnesses left for the prosecution.

Grant funds new Cornell equipment at Mount Vernon program
Cornell College in Mount Vernon has received a grant exceeding 178 500 from the Roy J Carver Charitable Trust to buy cell culture equipment a gel documentation system an atomic absorption spectrometer and a gas chromatograph mass spectrometer. The equipment will be used across courses and strengthen student faculty research by integrating biology and chemistry and expanding hands on lab opportunities.

Tripoli Woman Dies After Ditch Entry During Patrol Escort
Cindy Lou Nelson, 52, of Tripoli, died after collapsing while being escorted to a patrol car from her vehicle that had entered a ditch on Highway 63 north of Waterloo. Her son, 19, was with her as deputies arrived about 5:50 a.m. The woman was taken to Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo where she was pronounced dead.

Snowmobiler Hospitalized After Culvert Collision Near Oelwein
Janet Kohlmeyer, 46, of Oelwein, was injured when her snowmobile struck a culvert in a ditch along Highway 3 about 4 1/2 miles west of Oelwein. She was with three others and transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital, then to University Hospitals in Iowa City.

Burlington homicide updates on hit and run death
The death of Vicky Lynn Collier Kerfoot, 45, found Jan. 29 along Old U.S. Highway 34, is ruled a homicide from injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle. A passing motorist found her body, and Matthew Wayne Smith, 30, faces charged for failure to render aid.
