Researchers note NMR or MRI has not been used to measure oil flow because the magnets and equipment could cost as much as 1 million dollars. The statement highlights the financial barrier to applying MRI technology in oil flow measurement.
Dennis Barnaal, a Luther College physicist on sabbatical in Norway, built a $20 coil wrapped around a soda bottle to create a low-cost nuclear magnetic resonance device. The prototype at the North Sea oil pipeline suggests NMR can measure crude oil, sand, and seawater flow, potentially slashing equipment costs from about one million dollars.
