Upper Mississippi ferry guards three towns from bridge collapse
In Marquette, Prairie du Chien and McGregor residents cut a half mile canal in ice to operate a 26 foot ferry linking Marquette to an island near Prairie du Chien. About 300 riders daily pay a dollar for a ten minute crossing, easing a near 120 mile round trip for workers after the bridge closing January 16.
