Linn county board of supervisors approved a $5,000 appropriation for the Linn County Farm Bureau for 1950 after delaying to press for county agent action. The board set February 21 for bids on treated lumber and piling for county bridges totaling about $24,913.01. Gravel assessments were approved for two secondary road districts in Bertram and Clinton townships with no objections.
FBI Director J Edgar Hoover told Congress there will be more hydrogen atomic bomb spy arrests and that Klaus Fuchs was linked to the Canadian spy ring exposed in 1946. Hoover testified for three hours in a closed Senate subcommittee session about Fuchs using several couriers to move U S secrets to the Soviet Union. He warned that arrests may take time and that Canada and Britain would yield more suspects than the United States.
Canon Bernard Iddings Bell told about 500 Coe college students and Iowa ministers at St. Pauls Methodist church during the annual Coe Ministers day. He warned that greed has corrupted the church and civilization and urged a remnant leadership guided by Christ. Dr. Benjamin Bush spoke on spiritual recovery in Europe.
FBI Director J Edgar Hoover told congressmen there are about 540000 Communists and fellow travelers in the United States with roughly 54000 card carrying party members.
Senator Hickenlooper warned that further spy revelations may surface as a German-born British naturalized figure named Fuchs is darkening public attention. The atomic committee member criticized security lapses while recalling his push for accountability in the Atomic Energy Commission.

Anna Conway died Saturday in Pasadena California after a long illness. Born May 6 1876 in Chicago she lived in Cedar Rapids 56 years. Survived by three children Robert D Conway Mrs Leonard Sojka and Mrs Sanders six grandchildren and siblings. Body to Cedar Rapids with services at Polansky chapel and St Wenceslaus church. Burial in St Johns cemetery. Rosary Thursday at Polansky chapel.
Emily Davidson died Tuesday aged 78 born in Wales on June 8 1866 came to the United States at age three and lived in Cedar Rapids for 20 years. Services are at 10 a.m. Thursday in Turner chapel with Dr Andrew E Kurth and burial at Stanwood. She was the widow of Franklin F. Davidson.
Marie M. Skala died Friday in Long Beach California. Services set for 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Polansky chapel with Rev. Anthony W. Chihak officiating. Rosary to be recited Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Burial in Bohemian National cemetery. Former Cedar Rapids resident, widow of Thomas J. Skala, moved to California 30 years ago. Friends may call at the chapel.
Mrs Libbie J Krout died Monday at 1217 Second Avenue SE Cedar Rapids. Funeral services will be at 1 30 p m Thursday in Turner chapel with Rev R Franklin Galloway officiating. Burial will be Cedar Memorial cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel. She was a lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids and Shueyville.
Robert E. Bednasek a 24 year old former University of Iowa student from Cedar Rapids was arraigned in district court on a first degree murder charge. He was granted until Feb. 15 to enter an answer and has been jailed without bond since Dec. 11. If tried on the information the trial would begin about 30 days from now.
The coal shortage shuts down overtime at General Motors plants. President C E Wilson says plants had planned extra hours for model changes and spring stock, but overtime is canceled to conserve fuel and distribute steel over the standard work week.
Fairfax services for Mrs LaBelle W Wallace who died Friday at Shelton Nebraska will be held at Fairfax cemetery graveside at 10 a.m. Friday The body arrives at Turner chapel in Cedar Rapids early Friday morning. Mrs Wallace was widow of Charles Mason Wallace

He stressed knowledge as vital to meet wartime threats and urged communities to plan self protection and medical responses to reduce atomic neurosis.
The Iowa State Bar Association plans to forward its opinions on Carroll O. Switzer to the Senate Judiciary Committee Friday. Replies from 22 board members are being tabulated and will go to Senator Pat McCarran who chairs the committee. Switzer’s nomination by President Truman faces Senate confirmation amid opposition from Senator Guy Gillette who opposed the recess appointment.
Cedar Rapids detectives arrest a 15 year old boy for a novel yet dishonest scam. He visits westside homes asking for loans of a dollar or less claiming he ran out of gas and will repay after getting gasoline. Police say he netted about five dollars and had prior juvenile trouble for soliciting funds for a Boy Scout troop.
Christians and Jews of Cedar Rapids will join a roundtable discussion on The Place of Church and Brotherhood at Temple Judah 1947 Washington Avenue SE Wednesday at 8 p.m. Panelists include Dr Marvin B Kober St Pauls Methodist Church the Rev C H Copeland Bethel AME Church the Rev George A Stem All Saints Catholic Church and Rabbi David Raab Temple Judah. Courthouse defendants in Cedar Rapids file a cross petition asking for a counter injunction against plaintiffs. They seek to restore door locks, access, and account controls, and argue the center has no proper plaintiff status and that certified CIO union members have a right to attend and vote at meetings. Judge Floyd Philbrick on Tuesday ruled in favor of H. G. Norbohm and dismissed the damage suit filed by Delmar L. Andersen at Andersen’s cost. Andersen sought $442.11 for damages from an accident on September 2 in the 4000 block on Center Point Road NE.
District Judge J. E. Heiserman dismissed the divorce petition of Edna M. Booth against Wilbur J. Booth on Tuesday after the plaintiff’s motion. The filing reveals a pending foreclosure suit involving the Booth parties.

Washington AP Harold F Ambrose a senior Post Office official resigned Jan 11 over a stamp investment scheme that promised 50 profit in 90 days. About 400000 was invested. over 200000 was lost as the plan collapsed. Ambrose denied personal profit and his wife said he reported his troubles to Senator O Mahoney before quitting.
