Debates Over Tax Revenue and War Financing
A column discusses the new tax bill aiming for 2.315 billion in revenue, with critics Walters and Willkie urging higher totals. It questions attaining fiscal balance, wartime costs, and pay-as-you-go plans while noting political risks for office seekers and proposals to tax, cut, or subsidize as needed. The piece also notes Henry Lodge's resignation and GOP-Democratic tensions over army service and legislative control, with La Follette proposing a third path for production and living standards amid inflation fears. The weather section forecasts continued cold and shifting conditions, challenging claims of a mild winter.
