Origins of Valentines Day Rooted in Saint Names and Folklore
The origin of Valentine s Day traces to multiple saints named Valentine with Roman martyr feast days on February 14. Scholars debate the word s derivation from valens or galatin, and early messages featured gilt cupids and Hymen s Bower. Esther Howland produced America s first fancy valentine in 1850, fueling costly elaborate designs.
