State approves 4 percent growth funding for Cedar Rapids schools
Iowa lawmakers approved a 4 percent allowable growth increase, adding about 4.3 million to Cedar Rapids public schools in the 2002-03 budget. Superintendent Lew Finch warned it is not funding new programs and will not cover all rising costs. The measure, backed 96-0 in the House and 48-1 in the Senate, aims to boost state aid by 63 million and allow a 40.3 million rise in local property taxes, helping schools avoid major cuts but likely not offset high utility and health care costs.
