Haitian orphans face trafficking risk as foreign adoption limits bite

After the quake about 380000 Haitian children lost one or both parents, with experts fearing increased trafficking into prostitution or slavery. Prime Minister Bellerive restricts adoptions, while 10 U.S. citizens were detained for trying to move 33 children via the Dominican Republic without papers. The Maison des Enfants de Dieu reports 100+ parents seeking homes abroad, but the orphanage now declines new intakes and focuses on placing its 135 children overseas.

Culver plan to shift road funds to patrol dies in Iowa

Iowa lawmakers say Gov. Culver’s proposal to divert 50 million from the road fund to the State Patrol is dead for the year. Republican Doug Struyk and Democrat Mary Mascher said winter damage and funding gaps ensure roads need the money, not the patrol. The House panel will hold a public hearing on Senate File 2088, with sign up via the Legislative Information Office.
