A crowd surged Sunday at Montgomery Ward & Co in Westdale Mall, Cedar Rapids, as 200 Cabbage Patch Preemie dolls vanished by 1 30 pm. Ward’s spokesman cited high demand and a price of 42 99 as possible slowing sales while noting future shipments awaited.
Former 2nd District Congressman James Bromwell was jailed in Linn County after not appearing in Linn District Court on charges of operating a vehicle without current registration and driving without a license. An attorney entered an innocent plea, a trial date was set, and the judge ordered release on recognizance.

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller filed suit against Gary Earl Fries of Cedar Rapids doing business as Buffalo Bill Marion alleging violation of the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act. The Linn District Court case claims Fries took numerous leather goods orders since May 1982, failed to fill them or refund payments, and used deceptive shipping claims. The suit seeks an injunction preventing new orders until current ones are completed or refunds issued and a broad ban on advertising or selling by fraud.
Twenty one motorists were arrested and charged with drunk driving from early Saturday through Monday in Linn County. The list includes Richard Stallman in Cedar Rapids, Steve Galloway in Manchester, James Herndon in Mount Vernon, Robin Mantor in Cedar Rapids, and others with multiple accompanying charges such as speeding, driving left of center, and license suspensions.
