Semi Tough film review bafflingly ruins its source material
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reviews Semi-Tough starring Burt Reynolds Kris Kristofferson and Jill Clayburgh. David Merrick production released by United Artists. The director Michael Ritchie and writer Walter Bernstein retain crude humor from the novel but lose the book’s subculture wit and character depth. It focuses on Billy Clyde Puckett Shake Tiller and Barbara Jane Bookman in a volatile relationship with BEAT influence. The NFL provides little film cooperation and the result is jumbled sport scenes and flat plotting despite occasional laughs.
