Polio Death At Sea Forces Mercy Mission Halt
An unidentified army officer aboard the troop transport Gen. M. M. Patrick died from polio while heading toward Seattle. A Coast Guard PBY with an iron lung was ready to attempt a dawn rescue in five foot seas, but plans were canceled as the officer died seven hours after the initial warning. The Patrick carried 809 aboard including 205 military dependents and eight government employees. Quarantine possibilities awaited after the ship’s arrival.

Return of Czech Flyers Planned
MERNBERG UP The U S air force offered to repair a Czech military plane so its two crewmen could fly it back home after a forced landing near here Friday night. A Czech colonel and corporal lost fuel and crash landed on a farm. The flyers aimed to return to Czechoslovakia as a state department spokesman said arrangements would be made through diplomatic channels. They were brought to the area pending their return. One flyer asked a German farmer for permission to call Pilsen but was refused and the farmer alerted West German police, who notified the U S army.

Eight Die as Home Burns in Springfield Fire Tragedy
Fire tore through a four room frame house killing seven children and the mother of four. Victims include Linda Letterman six Kay four Barbara two John Jr four months Gary Letterman four Linda Lee Letterman ten and Sandra Kay Letterman one. Father John Lillard thirty escaped with severe burns. The Letterman children had been staying with the Lillard family while their mother, divorced, was at a hospital with another critically ill son. Origin of the fire unknown.

An earthquake wrecked four towns in Chiapas on Friday killing many and spreading damage over a 50 mile diameter area. Mercy planes flew doctors nurses medicines and supplies to the stricken jungle zone about 70 miles northeast of Tuxtla Gutiérrez and 100 miles from the Guatemalan frontier as communications were disrupted.

Plane with 16 Is Down in Alaska
A C-47 with 16 aboard crashed about 15 miles northeast of Curry Alaska. Several servicemen survived and Capt Earl Ray of Elmendorf said more than two were alive though the exact count was unknown. The aircraft, from Elmendorf, vanished in freezing rain during a 275 mile flight to Ladd AFB. Rescue planes were prepared to fly.

A United States Air Force RC212 flying laboratory with 13 aboard crashed while attempting a landing in fog over San Pablo bay near Hamilton Field California. All crew survived with no serious injuries as fog prevented quick discovery, and a radar boat located the wreck two miles from the runway.
