Proved sires boost dairy gains in Beltsville experiments
Dr. Reed outlines 39 years of breeding research at Beltsville Maryland showing proved sires in Holstein and Jersey herds raise milk output. Cross breeding with different breeds cut generation time to gain 155 pounds butterfat in two generations, vs 200 pounds in six to eight generations of purebred matings. He argues many commercial farmers should use top bulls with AI access to improve production.
