Darlan Proposes Paris Plan With Laval for Cabinet
Admiral Francois Darlan left for Paris to present a compromise cabinet plan with Pierre Laval. The proposal would place Darlan as premier and Laval as vice premier with control of interior and police. Gen Charles Huntziger would stay as war minister, forming a four man inner cabinet with Laval and Baudoin. Petain would relinquish overall cabinet control while keeping confidence in Darlan as premier designate. The plan follows Laval’s pursuit of the premiership and aims to restore relations with Germany. The Paris press intensified its attacks on Petain’s circle as the deadlock over Laval’s fate continued.
