Abolitionist John Brown and troops stayed at William Maxson's Springdale house in winter 1857 58 before Harpers Ferry, with the home's basement serving as a stop. a 2017 Pearson House trap door in Keosauqua reveals another stop used by enslaved people escaping to freedom.
