The season’s first major snowstorm is blamed for four traffic deaths across Iowa. Joyce Brandtner, 24, of Iowa City died on Interstate 80 near Coralville after her car crossed the median into a semitrailer. The storm also caused a fatal crash near Denison, a two-car collision near Grand Junction, and a school bus incident near Traer.
The Iowa Senate approved a tax relief bill 38 to 11 to cap annual assessed value increases at six percent for commercial and industrial property, easing the burden with higher homestead credits, farmland credits, and state school funding. The House planned to pass it Wednesday, sending it to Gov. Ray for signature.
Fire inspectors ruled the Fifth Avenue Seventh Street SE blaze arson. No deaths. 32 residents displaced, the largest single-fire displacement in Cedar Rapids history. The wood structure and lack of fire stops helped the rapid spread. Investigators cited no disclosed details to avoid jeopardizing the case.
North Tama County school bus carrying about 27 students was rear struck by a semi truck south of Traer at 8 05 am. The bus driver Alice Chezik 38 Traer and the truck driver Leon Yantis 29 Conrad. The bus spun into a ditch while the hog laden truck jackknifed into the opposite ditch. Eight students reported minor injuries. Two Tama ambulances assisted at the scene.
Fires continued to burn in the prison gymnasium as responders searched for more victims after the blaze tore through the Santa Fe facility. Officials reported extensive damage and ongoing efforts to locate additional bodies while containment efforts proceeded.

Prosecutors vow stiff penalties for up to 100 inmates believed responsible. Roof collapse hampered access as officials expect more bodies in the gym cited as a torture chamber.
