Southern Loop Allows Freshmen in Varsity After Sept. 1

The 17 member Southern conference voted to permit freshmen to participate in varsity athletics after Sept. 1 due to the draft program. Max Farrington, president of the conference and GWU athletic director, announced that 11 members backed eligibility after Sept. 1, five favored immediate participation, and one opposed any freshman use.

Former Champ Jenkins Held in Soldier's Death

Lew Jenkins, former lightweight champion, was in custody in Colorado Springs for investigation into the death of Cpl. David L. Dexter of Camp Carson. Dexter, 22, was struck at a roadblock on state highway 115 between Camp Carson and Colorado Springs when Jenkins’ car hit the roadblock Saturday night.

Bud Svendsen Named Gopher Football Assistant Coach

Earl Bud Svendsen, former Gopher star, is named assistant football coach at the University of Minnesota. Athletic Director Ike Armstrong announced the appointment on Monday. Svendsen comes from Lafayette College where he was a line coach. his Minnesota assignment was not specified.

Little change in the Cedar Rapids Marion scoring race last week as Dick Dickson moves to second behind Wilson’s Wally Krause. Krause holds a higher average at 14.58 to 13.29. both could surpass Norm Barnes’s 223 points if trends persist. Tom Jost leads Marion’s Hugh Leffingwell in total points by eight despite an average drop to 17.89, with Jost having played four more games. Leffingwell now posts an average of 21.47.

Four Cents a Bout At Golden Gloves

The 16th annual Gazette-KCRG Golden Gloves will be held at Memorial Coliseum with 25 bouts per night on February 13 and 14. General admission is one dollar for those two nights, with reserved seats from 1.20 to 1.50, and final night prices from 1.25 to 2.25.
