The U.S. Health and Human Services secretary warned that a pandemic like 1918 could sickens up to 90 million Americans with half hospitalized and about 2 percent dead, but said planning at all government levels, schools, and hospitals can mitigate impacts.
Iowa funding to plan for a flu pandemic totals 1.22 million as part of 100 million in grants backing a 350 million federal emergency package approved by Congress in December. Leavitt spoke at an Iowa planning summit in Des Moines noting major employers may see 30 percent of staff home sick or caring for someone ill and another 30 percent fear to come to work. Families need their own plans to handle food disruptions during a pandemic.
The Iowa Family Planning Network begins offering free birth control and related services to low income women ages 13 to 44. The program aims to reduce unintended pregnancies with access through county DHS offices and local clinics in Linn and Johnson counties.
