University of Iowa researchers report that dramatic rises in blood pressure during REM sleep may contribute to heart attacks and strokes in hypertensive individuals. The study, led by Dr. Vivend Somers, notes higher baseline pressures and reduced ability to lower BP in hypertension, with findings published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
