An audit shows a health insurance fund for Iowa residents earning above Medicaid thresholds ran a deficit of at least 1.3 million dollars. The note appears on page 5A alongside items on taxes, contracts, and public officials.

A brutal cold snap from the Northwest to New England and south to Texas closes schools and state offices. Four sledding deaths in Washington and eleven other deaths blamed on the weather, with subzero readings from Montana to Iowa and record lows in many places.
Extreme cold forced a late delivery schedule with carriers allowed up to an hour delay to avoid the worst of subzero temperatures as forecasts warned of twenty five degrees below zero.
Perry Scott Baker 24 of Dubuque testified via 39 minute taped confession in a Black Hawk County trial for murder sexual abuse and robbery. He described strangling a 24 year old Platteville woman on Aug 3 and disposing of her body saying I am guilty as charged. His attorneys seek diminished responsibility due to alleged alcoholic blackout. The all woman jury heard the confession after pretrial publicity moved the trial from Dubuque to Waterloo.
Zadar! Cow from Hell premiered to a sold out crowd at Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City last night. Filmed in Iowa, the Duck's Breath Mystery Theatre members described the project as a training ground for future Iowa City films and greeted supporters after a nation public radio style warm up.
