Greenpeace protesters chain themselves to acid dumping barge anchor
In New York Greenpeace members locked to the anchor of the acid dumping barge William N. Taft No. 1 to halt a planned trip. Spokesman Peter Dykstra said the action was nonviolent and direct. Police and Coast Guard warned they would remove the demonstrators if they did not disengage. The barge, owned by N.S. Industries of New York, pulls sulfuric acid from Sayreville, New Jersey. A recent restraining order from U.S. District Judge Robert Ward bars Greenpeace from interfering with deep draft vessels in the New York area.
