Moscow proposed contracts worth 400 million pounds to British industries for deliveries from 1955 to 1997. Ivan Kabanov handed the memo to 32 British businessmen during their Moscow visit. The package covers tankers, ships, industrial plants, power stations, railroad gear, docks, fish carriers, and boilers as part of a wider East-West trade revival.
Chicago enforces strict rabies quarantine as two rabid dogs bite nearly two dozen people in Southside areas. A four year old dies after a dog bite while Dr. Robert J. Carroll battles exposure. Sheriff Babb orders extra dog catches and authorizes shooting vicious dogs to protect the public. Farmers in the What Cheer area must travel 24 miles round trip to fetch water after the city well there runs low. In the drought struck zone, residents now haul from Sigourney 12 miles away while Columbus City’s public well dries up, prompting crews to haul from Columbus Junction. A farmhouse near Jesup burned and killed three Schroeder children Allen Keith 4 Ronnie Lee 3 and Pamela Jean 2. Their mother with first and second degree burns escaped from the basement fire and was treated for shock. Two other children were at school.
John Hvasta 26 of Hillside New Jersey arrives in Nuernberg en route to the United States after escaping a Czech prison in January 1952. He hid in Czechoslovakia 21 months before surrendering to the Prague embassy October 2 and was later released to American officials. The U S State Department said no deal was made with Prague.
Ottumwa police report a house fire near the Burlington tracks claimed the life of 2 year old Larry Nicholson. His 6 month old brother Robert remained in critical condition with burns, while their mother suffered serious injuries. A 3-year-old survived. Roommates and railroad workers aided in rescues.
The Iowa Weather Bureau says temperatures will remain mild with no significant change through Saturday. Forecast highs vary from the northeast lows to the upper 50s in the southwest. Recent readings include 31 at Dubuque, 51 at Sioux City, and 40 in Cedar Rapids with a 32 overnight low. At 2:30 p.m. Thursday the temp was 47.
Raymond J. Plower 30 of Walker waived to the grand jury on a charge of assault with intent to murder and was released on 5900 bond. He was arrested after admitting he shot his wife Betty Ann 26 in the abdomen with a rifle during a kitchen argument at their farm home south of Walker. She was taken to Winston hospital and was in good condition and improving.
Chicago AP reports Leona Rohr er, operator of an apartment building, seeks to evict Rahaj a 104%-foot Indian python owned by Victoria Ojcourek who performs with it as Princess Elvera in a nightclub act. Judge Casmir Cwiklinski hears the case Wednesday.
